Programme Overview

The Foundation Certificate in Engineering teaches students a broad range of introductory technical courses. The programme will help students to reach GCE 'A' level equivalent standard.

Subject Outline

All Foundation Certificate programmes at Glasgow International College contain two elements:

Academic Skills Modules

Develop key academic skills including research, writing, presentation and analysis skills.

Subject Modules

Cover the basics of your chosen area of study so that you have the knowledge you need. Then progress to more specialised study that focuses on the topics and skills you will need most in your chosen undergraduate degree course.

English language tuition is also provided for students who need it.

All modules are specifically designed to meet the needs of international students. They are taught with your progression to the University of Glasgow in mind.

Progression to the University of Glasgow

The Foundation Certificate in Engineering is equivalent to Year 1 of an undergraduate degree course at the University of Glasgow.

Upon successful completion of the Foundation Certificate, and depending on your choice of Engineering degree course, you will either:

  • Progress to the Diploma in Engineering. If you successfully complete the Diploma in Engineering to the required level, you will progress directly to Year 3 of certain University of Glasgow degree courses.
  • Progress directly into Year 2 of your chosen University of Glasgow degree course.

Three core academic skills modules:
  • Academic skills 1a
  • Academic skills 1b
  • Academic skills 2
Two core subject modules:
  • Foundation Mathematics
  • Fundamentals of Science
Three Engineering pathway modules:
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Basic Engineering
  • Physical Sciences
Students taking the three term programme take four additional English language modules:
  • Language and Communication for Academic Study 2a
  • Language and Communication for Academic Study 2b
  • Language and Communication for Academic Study 3a
  • Language and Communication for Academic Study 3b

Progression Route

Progression routes

Progression is either to Year 2 of a University of Glasgow degree course or to the Diploma in Engineering and then Year 3 of a University of Glasgow degree course.

Progression to the University of Glasgow is guaranteed provided you successfully complete your Glasgow International College programme(s) at the required level.

The following progression routes are offered:

Direct entry to Year 2 of:

Entry to Diploma in Engineering and then direct entry to Year 3 of:
