About the University of Glasgow

The University of Glasgow is the fourth oldest university in the UK. Historic buildings meet state-of-the-art facilities to provide a fulfilling educational experience.

 

Pedigree

In 2007 the University of Glasgow was named The Sunday Times Scottish University of the Year. It is consistently ranked amongst the world’s top universities. Recent rankings include:

  • 16th in the UK (The Complete University Guide 2009)
  • 73rd in the world (The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2008)
  • 2nd in the UK for international student support (The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2008)
  • 3rd in the UK for quality of student experience (The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2008)

 

The University is also highly rated for its teaching and research. In 2008 the University’s teaching was voted the 12th best in the UK by students. Twenty-three subject areas have been awarded a maximum 5 out of 5 for their research, making Glasgow one of the best universities in the UK for research. The quality of a University of Glasgow degree greatly enhances students’ career prospects. Ninety-five per cent of Glasgow graduates are employed or in further education within six months of graduating.

 

People

During its long history, the University of Glasgow has produced many distinguished alumni. From philosopher Adam Smith, to physicist Lord Kelvin; inventor John Logie Baird to author Christopher Brookmyre. Each year more than 15,000 undergraduates study at the University, and 4,900 postgraduates. Students come from over 120 countries to study at the University of Glasgow, with around 3,000 international students welcomed each year.

 

Facilities

The University of Glasgow is set in the city’s liveliest, most diverse area – the West End. But as well as enjoying all that the city has to offer, the University campus provides students with excellent facilities, including:
  • one of the best academic libraries in Europe
  • computer labs across campus
  • two students unions, housing 150 clubs and societies
  • sports facilities including swimming pool and tennis courts
